13-19 Careers Advice and Guidance
From 2012 schools have a responsibility to secure sufficient careers advice and guidance for their students to enable them to consider all the different options available to them and draw up a plan for their future. In many schools this service will be delivered by Careers South West.
In Devon, Cornwall, Plymouth and Torbay Careers South West delivers services on behalf of the local authorities to encourage, enable or assist young people to participate in education or training. This service is aimed at those who have difficulties for one reason or another in securing a place in learning after the age of 16
In Somerset, Careers South West works alongside the Integrated Youth Support Service and provides assessments for young people with special needs to help them progress in their learning and help to secure a place in learning Post 16 (known as the September Guarantee).
In addition Careers South West offers a range of services directly to young people and adults including psychometric assessments to help people make the best choices for their future. Please talk to us if you are unsure about which services you may be entitled to.
In all areas, Devon, Cornwall, Plymouth, Torbay and Somerset, Careers South West operates a tracking service on behalf of the local authorities. We work with schools, colleges, training providers and employers to ensure that young people have a place in learning and work. Where young people do not have a place we will make contact and offer them help and support, either directly or through our partner services, to secure a place in learning and/or work.
Other Services
Devon Education Business Partnership (DEBP) promotes and develops enterprise and work related learning initiatives linking schools and colleges with private and public sector businesses. Services are delivered in Devon and in neighbouring authorities.
Investor in Careers (IiC) is owned and administered by the Company - is a widely adopted accredited careers education kitemark standard that promotes the importance of raising quality, both regionally and nationally.
STEM Careers South West manages the regional contract to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers. A range of high quality activities to enhance and enrich the STEM curriculum are offered and STEM ambassadors, drawn from industry and commerce, can be made available to support activities.
Next Step promotes the benefits of learning and work by providing comprehensive careers information and advice to all adults aged 19+ and has already helped millions of people improve their working lives. Next Step Careers advisers are professionally qualified and can give individual advice to help make the right choices about learning and work. The service is available online as well as through advisers on the telephone and face to face and is free to all adults, aged 19 and over, or aged 18 and over if Job Centre Plus customer.
The Next Step Volunteer Service aims to support and recruit people in Somerset who wish to be volunteers working with disadvantage adults and children. next-step volunteer services have a number of projects running in Somerset including the Next-step volunteer bureau, Somerset 'You-can-Do', Out and About, Mental Health Services, Bus Buddy and All about Friends.
Client Caseload Information System
The CCIS (Client Caseload Information System) records every contact young people and their parents and carers have with our Personal Advisers.
Populating the CCIS allows us to maintain contact with of all 13-19 year olds in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and maps their personal progression towards further learning and employment.
The CCIS is populated with information supplied, under the Learning & Skills Act 2000, by schools and the local authority. Parents have the option to opt out if they do not want their children's details held on the database.The Benefits of Psychometric Assessment
