Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics has shown that unemployment has seen it’s largest increase since May 2009 and the first since January this year, those now jobless stands at 2.49 million an increase of 38,000.

A recent TUC Report called ‘Age and Gender’ has looked at how the job market has changed in the past 20 years. It shows that there has been a significant increase in people continuing to work beyond 65 and that young people have become less likely to be in employment, mainly because of the expansion of education, but also as young people have been hit hard by the recession.

A recent study commissioned Teesside University, which asked 16-24-year-olds about their career prospects, has found that 72% of those polled thought there were not enough quality jobs for young people and just over half (57%) believed that employers discriminated against them because of their age.

Over a thousand South West school students (11-18 yr olds) will become scientists for the day on Tuesday 21st June at the University of Exeter. At The Big Bang South West schools from Cheltenham to Cape Cornwall will showcase their best STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) projects and experience the whiz, bang, clunk and gloop of science, maths and engineering.
TV star, chemist and Professor of Public Understanding of Science at the University of Brighton Professor Hal will give explosive chemistry demonstrations. His show includes using carbon dioxide to start a fire, blowing up a dustbin and an exploding ostrich egg.
