Next Step Volunteer Bureau Sets the Standard

Posted on Apr 13, 2011

Careers South West Ltd has been awarded Approved Provider Status (APS) for its Next Step Volunteer Bureau by the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, the national strategic body for mentoring and befriending in England.

The APS quality standard is the only quality assurance mark specifically for organisations and projects providing one to one volunteer mentoring or befriending and is made up of 12 elements which cover everything from safeguarding and staff competence through to monitoring the service and evaluating its effectiveness. In order to achieve APS the Next Step Volunteer Bureau demonstrated that it met all of the requirements across each of the elements.

The Next Step Volunteer Bureau, which is managed by Careers South West Ltd, recruits and supports people interested in volunteering within Somerset County Councils Social Care Service, including the Out and About mentoring and befriending project for people with medium to severe and multiple learning disabilities. The volunteers befriend and support individuals to get out and about in the community, participating in a range of activities including basic computer skills, swimming, horse riding, going for walks or simply going out for a coffee.

Jenny Rudge, Chief Executive, said "We are always striving to give the best possible service to all our customers, and I am delighted that we are able add this wonderful award to our list of achievements".

Bryan Mitchell, Next Step Voluntary Services Manager said "Achieving approved provider status has been a big boost to the team, it is great to know that the project is recognised at a national standard".

Volunteering as a mentor or befriender is becoming increasingly popular in schools and colleges, voluntary organisations and within local authorities and businesses. Careers South West Ltd is keen, as part of the wide range of services which they offer, to explore ways for people of all ages to gain skills and experience by becoming volunteers.
